Been pretty busy and haven’t been updated in a while, sorry about that to the 2 people that read this.

This is something I read a while back, but think is a great article. It talks about what first motivated James Cameron towards his film career, how he worked his way up the movie food chain, how he came up with his latest and greatest creation, Avatar, and why it may revolutionize movies. There are some other interesting tidbits about his other works, like Titanic, and the lesser known Titanic dives that inspired him.

Here’s a great chart/graph from the popular comic XKCD

It shows all the different character interactions across the span several movies. The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars trilogy certainly had some time put into them and are pretty cool. The last two are more of the punchline of the comic, being hilarious, but only if you’ve seen 12 Angry Men, which most people have, or Primer, which most people haven’t. Note: Primer deals with extensive time-travel.

Also, the alt-text, which is important for XKCD fans is: “In the LotR map, up and down correspond LOOSELY to northwest and southeast respectively.”

I always enjoy stuff like this. Graphs without numbers and dots are always fun.

This shows what a percentage of films were of certain genres over 100 years. Its interesting to see how the film industry has changed, and also how it has stayed the same. While there’s been a pretty consistent amount of drama, comedy and adventure films, we can see exactly where westerns died out, and porn started to ravage the film world.

Also, for the first decade of the commercial film industry, you can see how almost 70% of the films produced were short films, which makes sense when the world was still getting use to the idea. Some other things to notice are the spikes in the Crime genre, the eve of Horror films, and the few years that westerns tried to make a comeback.
